Rau Julietta

Julietta V. Rau (Dr, PhD) is currently researcher and head of the laboratory and research group at the Institute of the Structure of Matter of the Italian National Research Council (ISM-CNR, Rome, Italy). She is the author of more than 130 publications in International Journals and about 145 presentations and Invited talks at International Conferences. She received several international awards for her research achievements. Her present H-index is 20 (Google Scholar).
She is the CHAIR and organizer of the biennial BioMaH “Biomaterials for Healthcare” International Conference (https://biomah.ism.cnr.it) and the Member of the International Scientific Committees of various International Conferences in the field of Materials Science, Nanoscience, Biomaterials and Medical devices.
She is the Member of the Editorial Boards of Nature Scientific Reports, Bioactive Materials journal, EC Orthopaedics, and Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and Bioactive Materials (Fronties).
She is the Reviewer at several international journals and Lead Guest Editor of the Special Issue «Bioactive ceramic and glass systems for bone tissue engineering» in BioMed Research International journal and of the Special Issue “Exploring challenges ahead of nanotechnology for biomedicine” in Bioactive Materials journal.
Her present research interests regard innovative biomaterials for regenerative medicine, among them calcium phosphates and glass-ceramics based materials for tissue engineering applications. Her recent publications are dedicated to bioactive nanostructured coatings of innovative composition for orthopaedic and dental implant applications and cements for bones, cranial-facial surgery and dentistry applications. She is also involved (Project Leader of the Raman DXR Seed Unit Program (Europe) of Thermo Fisher Scientific Company (2016)) and interested in research projects dedicated to Raman spectroscopy applications in biomedicine and novel imaging approaches for cancer diagnostics. Aripova Mastura

M.Kh. Aripova graduated from the Tashkent Polytechnic Institute. M.Kh. Aripova, former and present, head of a number of state grants, as well as the NATO international grant “Science for Peace” “Assessment of transboundary water pollution in Central Asia” (2015)
Scientific activities Aripova M.Kh. closely related to medical materials science, glass and ceramics. The research results were presented at conferences in France, Germany, Russia and Kazakhstan. Abroad scientific articles published in Russia, France, Austria, Bulgaria.
Under her leadership, the production technology of facing plates based on local raw materials with a capacity of 360 thousand m2 / year was implemented at JV LLC ART GLOSS GALLERY. Successfully implemented the compositions of transparent and green glass for wine production at the plant “ASL OYNA”
She is the author of 10 lectures, 30 manuals, 4 patents and more than 60 scientific articles.
Under her leadership, 3 PhD theses have been defended, and several master’s theses are defended each year.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, currently works as the head of the department “Technology of silicate materials, rare and noble metals.”

Oliveira Miguel

J. Miguel Oliveira BSc, PhD (Portuguese, M, 40 years old) is a Principal Investigator “Investigador FCT 2012 and Investigador FCT 2015” at the PT Government Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B’s (http://www.3bs.uminho.pt/users/migueloliveira). He is the Director of Pre-Clinical Research at the FIFA MEDICAL CENTER, Estádio do Dragão, Porto, PT since Fev. 2013 and Pro-Director of the 3B’s Research Group, Univ. Minho, PT. Currently, he is a Lecturer in Doctoral Program in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells (TERM&SC) at UMinho, PT (since Dec. 2013). He is also an Invited lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, U. Porto (since Sept. 2013) and Dept. of Polymer Eng., UM, PT (2009-present). Along the years he has focused his work on the field of biomaterials for tissue engineering, nanomedicine, stem cells and cell/drug delivery. More recently, he set-up a new research line within the ICVS/3B’s on 3D in vitro models for cancer research. As result of his proficiency, he has published so far more than 260 scientific contributions in scientific journals with referee, being 4 of those review papers produced under invitation. Miguel Oliveira was approved 16 patents, published 5 books, 2 special issues in scientific journals, and more than 70 book chapters in books with international circulation. He has participated in more than 250 communications in national/international conferences and has been invited/keynote speaker in more than 40 plenary sessions. He has an h-index of 34, i10 of 82 and received more than 4935 citations. He has been awarded several prizes including the prestigious Jean Leray Award 2015 from European Society for Biomaterials for Young Scientists for Outstanding Contributions within the field of Biomaterials. He is very active on the elaboration and scientific coordination of several PT and international funded projects. In addition, he is member of the advisory /editorial board of the Journal Bio-Design and Manufacturing, Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, International Journal of Tissue Engineering, Journal ISRN Biomaterials, The Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics, Journal “Recent Patents on Corrosion Science”, and referee in more than 40 international journals.

Karlsdottir Sigrun Nanna

Sigrun N. Karlsdottir was born in Iceland in 1980. She received her B.S. degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 2003 from University of Iceland and her Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA in December 2007. She worked as a researcher and a project manager at Innovation Center Iceland in the Department of Materials, Energy and Biotechnology from 2008 to 2013. She is now a Professor at University of Iceland in the Department of Industrial-, and Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Karlsdottir is also a co-founder and an owner of Gerosion Ltd. an engineering consulting and R&D Company, where she serves as a COB since 2014. Dr. Karlsdottir research interests include corrosion of metals, scaling and corrosion in geothermal environment, ceramic processing and characterization, failure analysis, and oxidation of ultra-high temperature ceramics. Her focus in recent years has been on materials performance in extreme environments such as corrosion of metals in superheated geothermal steam and coating materials for geothermal equipment. She has published several papers in these fields, received research grants from the energy sector, and consulted Icelandic energy companies in matters related to corrosion and material selection in geothermal environments.

Branzei Mihai

Mihai Branzei received the diploma degree in Metallurgy (1985) and the Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering (2001) from the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (Romania). Since 1991 he became Assistant Professor at the same university, and in present is Associate Professor in the Department of Metallic Materials Science, Physical Metallurgy. From 2003 until 2008 he gains post-doctoral fellowships and specializations in BUEHLER / IFW Dresden / TU Dresden (Germany), ANTER Corporation (USA), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal).
His areas of interest are quantitative microscopy and thermophysical properties of materials. The technical activities consists in: specific expertise for different beneficiaries; the accomplishing of the following research and didactic laboratories: “Metallography Sample Preparation Lab.”, ”Quantitative Light Microscopy Lab.”, “Material Thermophysical Testing Center” (whose director is also currently). He has published 7 books as a co-author, 5 patents and more than 27 indexed papers in the last 5 years. He is member of the boarding/scientific/steering committee of different meetings, head of the organizing committee for different international conferences, and reviewer for different journals.

Csaki Ioana

Ioana Csaki was borne in 1975 in Bucharest, Romania and studied in University Politehnica Bucharest, Department of Engineering Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering department, graduate in 1999. She became PhD in 2007 in the field of Materials Engineering. She is now associate professor, habilitated, in the Department of Metallic Materials Production, Materials Science and Engineering Faculty in University Politehnica Bucharest. Dr. Csaki wrote over 58 articles published in ISI and IBD journals. Also she has more than 30 papers presented in international conferences and she was involved in 49 research contracts at national level. She is involved in 7 international collaborations.
The research directions approached were metallic powders processing for new multi-component materials through powder metallurgy advanced materials, composite materials, high entropy alloys with very good mechanical properties and multi-component materials for coating parts submitted to high corrosion environment and high wear, improving the surfaces by coating with innovative materials to increase the lifespan for different components working in harsh environments.

Bezuidenhout Deon

Deon Bezuidenhout is an Associate Professor in the Christiaan Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Head of Biomaterials Sciences at the Cardiovascular Research Unit (CRU), with 23 years of research experience in the design, synthesis, modification, and processing of synthetic and bioprosthetic materials for use in cardiovascular devices, specializing in the development of biomaterial scaffolds and biomimetic matrices for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine approaches to vascular grafts, heart valves, myocardial infarction therapy and allied applications. He has established masters and doctoral degrees in Biomaterials at UCT and teaches biomaterials science and medical device development to students in Engineering, Medicine, Chemistry and other disciplines, has published 60 papers and 11 book chapters in the field, and holds more than 30 international patents on cardiovascular devices and technologies. He is also co-founder and technical director of Strait Access Technologies, a university startup company developing affordable heart valve devices and related therapies for low and middle income countries (LMICs).

Piconi Corrado

After his studies in Roma he joined the Ceramics Technology Laboratory of the National Committee for Nuclear Energy (now ENEA), where he carried out studies on the thermophysical properties of Uranium and Plutonium oxides used as nuclear fuels. Since 1975, the framework of agreements with the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA) and of AGIP Nucleare S.p.A. he carried out studies on the behavior of ceramic oxides as fuels for Thermal and Fast Breeder Nuclear Reactors in nominal and in off-normal conditions.
In 1989, due to moratorium in nuclear energy activities in Italy, he transferred the expertise and technologies of his research group to the development of ceramics for clinical applications, with special emphasis on zirconia. He has been Head of Research Unit in the National Research Council programme on Advanced Materials, and Scientific coordinator of EU-funded R&D projects. From 2000 to 2005 he was R&D Project Manager in Tecnobiomedica S.p.A working on the development of medical devices for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. From 2005 to 2014 he was Scientific Director of the Brindisi R&D Laboratory of GHIMAS S.p.A. (Brindisi, Italy), developing scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, dental implants using advanced ceramic composites either 3D laser sintering of titanium powders.
Since the year 2000 he is Scientific Consultant of the Medical Device Division of CeramTec GmbH.
Since 1997 he was appointed as Lecturer by the School of Orthopedics, Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University in Rome, School of Orthopedics and Traumatology. From 2016 he is Senior Associate of the Institute for the Science and Technology of Ceramic Materials of the Italian National Research Council (ISTEC-CNR), Faenza.
Prof. Piconi is member of the Advisory Board of the European Society for Ceramic Implantology (ESCI), member of the Italian Society for Biomaterials (SIB), of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB), of International Society for Ceramics in Medicine (ISCM), of Italian Society for Research in Orthopedics (IORS). He is referee for scientific journals (Acta Biomaterialia, Ceramics International, Journal of Advanced Biomaterials and Functional Materials. He is author of more than 100 articles and book chapters that had more than 9700 readings and more than 2550 citations (ResearchGate) by October 2018. His H-index is 30,12.

Horatiu Moldovan

Titu Maiorescu University, Bucharest, Romania
Dr. Horatiu Moldovan is a cardiovascular surgeon with an interest in developing models to study biomaterial-tissue interactions. He has a doctorate in science and medicine (MD, PhD,) from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. Since 2007 he is Associated Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the same university and currently at Titu Maiorescu University in Bucharest, Romania. Since 2016 is Associated Professor of Cardiovascular Biomaterials at the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Faculty of Science and Engineering of Materials. He was senior cardiovascular surgeon for over 25 years and the last 10 years, Head of the 1st Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at C. C. Iliescu Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, Fundeni Hospital. Currently is Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at SANADOR Hospital in Bucharest.
He is author/coauthor of 72 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has made more than 200 presentations to scientific meetings worldwide. In his career he was referent for 6 PhD thesis in the field of cardiovascular surgery.
Dr. Horatiu Moldovan is Full Member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences since 2016. He is Vice – President of the Romanian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery and member of the European Society of Cardiothoracic surgery (EACTS) since 2009 and the European Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (ESCVS) since 2000. He is also member of the Romanian Society of Biomaterials since 2016, Full Member of Romanian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery since 1998, Associated member of the Romanian Society of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology, Full member of the Society of Flebectomy, Associated Member of the Society of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Extracorporeal Technology since 2009
He is a former Associate Editor of the Romanian Journal of Cardiovascular surgery.
Dr. Horatiu Moldovan is Member of the Board of the Medical College of Bucharest and the technical Commission of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Ministry of Health.
His professional and scientific activity comprises of: research in the fields of cardiovascular surgery and biomaterials with application in cardiovascular surgery.
During the past years his work has involved valvular prosthesis, vascular prosthesis and bioadhesives in cooperation with the Univesity Politehnica of Bucharest.

Stefan Voicu

Dr. Stefan Ioan Voicu, Ph.D., (Habilitation) is Associate Professor at Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Materials Science, Politehnica University of Bucharest and working in the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Engineering and also member of the Advanced Polymer Materials Group, in the field of polymeric membrane materials and processes. He received his B.Sc. in Organic Chemistry, M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Polymeric Membranes, from 2016 having also Habilitation in Chemical Engineering, all at Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania. In the fields of polymers, polymer composites and polymeric membranes (for different applications—from water purification to sensors, fuel cells, and biomedical field), he has published over 50 SCI journal articles, 10 chapters, and 3 granted US patents.

Brandusa Ghiban

Prof. Dr. Brandusa Ghiban is a materials science engineer who obtained her Bachelors degree and Ph.D. from University Politehnica of Bucharest. As a researcher after a period of about seven years in Metallurgical Research Institute in Bucharest the activity was focused in the field of corrosion testing of ferrous alloys, she is now at the Biomaterials Group (BIOMAT) from Materials Science and Physical Metallurgy Department, Faculty Materials Science end Engineering, University Politehnica of Bucharest. As professor, Dr. Ghiban is holding courses and laboratory works on Faculty Materials Science end Engineering: ” Quality Assurance implants”, Biochemistry, ” Advanced methods for materials processing and Good Manufacturing Practice standards”, ” Electric and Magnetic Testing “, “Processes at the tissue – implant interface “, „Corrosion and Protection of Metallic Materials”,„Physical Metallurgy”, „Properties of Materials”, „Metallic Biomaterials”. As SOCRATES-ERASMUS coordinator of activities in the faculty SIM, more than 40 students were sent as ambassadors of UPB ERASMUS, and over 20 teachers participated in the bilateral agreements to support public lectures. Prof. Dr. Ghiban was visiting professor for lectures in the field of Materials Science and Biomaterials at prestigious universities from Europe: Politecnico di Torino, Italia (2000-2012), University of Patras, Greece (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009), La Sapienza University, Rome, Italy (2005), Ecole Nationale des engeneours, Tarbes, France (2009). Her professional and scientific activity comprises: three books and five scientific guidance for the preparation of students; Five theoretical chapters, total over 80 pages on “Treaty of Materials Science and Engineering” Volume 1 (2008), and volume 3 ( 2009); three specialty books for: preparing students for the studies, master, but researchers in the field of metallurgy and plastic deformations beings, and a book for biomaterials engineering; electronic courses “Physical Metallurgy”, “Metallic Biomaterials”, “Properties of Materials” and “Quality Assurance implants”, Biochemistry, Electric and Magnetic testing, Technical work consisted of implementation: five inventions with industrial applicability; three technical expertise judicial , 49 ISI scientific papers, 14 papers in international journals, 36 papers in national journals recognized by CNCSIS, 83 articles published in international recognized events volumes, 48 articles published in the proceedings of national scientific events. She was awarded at different international scientific salons: Gold Medals at International Inventions Salon from Geneva in 2007, 2009 and 2010; Gold Medal at Inventika International Salon form Bucharest in 2009, 2011; Silver Medal at Inventika International Salon in 2009; Mention from Romanian Society of Metallurgy at 2005; Big Award from Romanian Society of Metallurgy in 2004.

Cosmin Cotrut

Prof. Cosmin Mihai Cotrut is a materials scientist, whose work is focused in biomaterials surface engineering and corrosion science, developing new coatings and materials with enhanced mechanical, physical and chemical properties to improve the interactions with living tissue. He has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and since 2015 is Associate Professor at the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania and Invited Professor at the National Research Tomsk State University, Russia. He is author/coauthor in over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 4 chapters in international books and has presented over 120 papers at international conferences. Dr. Cosmin M. Cotrut performs as reviewer for numerous international journals (e.g. Corrosion Science, Journal of Dental Research, Applied Surface Science, Materials Chemistry and Physics). He is a member in the Editorial Board of Heliyon Journal as well as a current Guest Editor of Frontiers in Materials.
